Rumors about Christian McCaffrey holding out for a pay rise with the San Francisco 49ers have now been put to bed.

McCaffrey had been away from training camp for several days, and without any further context, his absence looked worrying on paper.

The reason given was simply “tightness,” with no elaboration on where or how serious it was. When head coach Kyle Shanahan was pressed for more information, he didn’t want to reveal much more, so naturally, speculation began to swirl.

A key theme throughout this offseason has always centred around the 49ers being careful with McCaffrey’s workload. It’s a point that has been emphasised time and time again.

The 49ers cannot afford an injury to McCaffrey or for him to miss significant game time. He played every single game last season and was hugely influential in San Francisco defying the odds to make the playoffs despite a heavily injured roster.

He remains the focal point of the offense, with much of the 49ers’ game plan built around him and his attributes, even though last season saw him lose some of the explosiveness that has defined his career.

Thankfully, at least for now, McCaffrey has put those concerns to rest, explaining that his absence was more about preparing for the Week 1 season opener in Australia than anything related to his contract.

“Yeah obviously when you don’t practice, the way the media works now it’s a firestorm," McCaffrey told reporters on Sunday.

"But this was part of the plan from the jump was to ramp up pretty big, get 9 or 10 practices in, kind of come back down and then ramp back up so we’re fresh for the duration.

"Our staff's done a great job of coming up with specific plans. Again, I feel great. I feel fresh, and it’s good to be back out there.”

A key point with McCaffrey is that he enters this season in much better physical shape than he did 12 months ago, when he was coming off a disastrous 2024 campaign that limited him to just four games.

San Francisco now need to keep their promise of carefully managing his workload, because freshness could define his season. There are plenty of people who believe McCaffrey has lost the explosiveness that once made him so dangerous, but his improved health compared to a year ago offers plenty of reason for optimism that we could see more glimpses of his 2022 and 2023 self.
