America has a classic salary milestone: six figures a year. Anthropic's average employee has cost their employer that much every month.
Anthropic's personnel expenses topped $1.7 billion for its 5,300 workers from July through September, according to an amended S-1 filing the AI company released Monday morning ahead of its initial public offering later this month. That means the expenses averaged over $322,000 per worker over the three-month span.
The total indicates how a seat inside Anthropic became one of the 21st century's quickest pathways to extraordinary wealth. Its coming IPO will mint a new cohort of multimillionaires. Even employees who've only been around for a couple of years have seen their stock options multiply in value several times over.
The AI juggernaut has used high salaries and a rapidly growing valuation to recruit skilled engineers, researchers, and other specialists. Over the first nine months of 2026, Anthropic's personnel costs totaled $4.8 billion, according to the S-1.
The last quarter's $1.7 billion tally included cash salaries and bonuses, benefits, and employer payroll taxes. The largest chunk of the total came from Anthropic's stock-based compensation expenses, an accounting measure of the equity it recognized for employees — that came out to $1.1 billion in the three-month span.
Against the high employee expenses, Anthropic's revenue has raced far ahead. Back in 2023, the company spent more than twice as much on personnel as it made in revenue. In the first nine months of 2026, personnel costs tallied just 15% of total revenue.
The numbers could fluctuate. Anthropic wrote in its S-1 that, as of the end of September, it had more than $32 billion in stock-based compensation expenses that it had not yet included in its accounting. A successful listing on the stock market would increase Anthropic's personnel costs in the coming quarters.
Anthropic quintupled in head count from the end of 2024 to the end of September 2026. It's still much smaller than its tech-industry peers. Meta is valued at around $1.6 trillion, a possible target for Anthropic's IPO. The social media giant has around 67,000 employees. Broadcom, worth about the same, has more than 30,000.
This trim size makes Anthropic look especially efficient, as Business Insider reported last week. The company tallied $6.6 million in annual revenue per employee, compared with estimates that put Meta at $3.2 million per employee and Google at $2.5 million.
"Talent density matters more than talent mass," Anthropic wrote in its S-1.
