Oscar-nominated actor Bill Murray crashed a live CNBC interview Monday with one of President Donald Trump’s top economic advisers, poking fun at the official’s perpetual grin.
Murray, who appeared on CNBC’s “Squawk Box” to promote a new streaming series, took aim at Kevin Hassett, director of the National Economic Council.
“Why is that man always smiling? I’m a little concerned,” Murray said. “Not worried. Concerned.”
Hassett was scheduled to join “Squawk Box” co-anchors Joe Kernen and Becky Quick via satellite from the White House. Murray inserted herself into the interview from the show’s set in Manhattan.
“I would regret it if I didn’t take this opportunity. Could you just say the words, ‘My dog just died’? I want to see what happens to your smile,” Murray said to Hassett.
“Well,” Hassett replied with a laugh, “is it your dog or my dog?”
“Your dog,” Murray said.
“Okay,” Hassett said with a frown. “My dog just died.”
Murray dropped by “Squawk Box” with author Tom Coyne to promote their new Paramount+ travel series “A Course Called Ireland,” a guide to the golf courses of Ireland. The six-part documentary series debuted Oct. 25.
CNBC did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the exchange between Murray and Hassett.
The former “Saturday Night Live” cast member is a longtime CNBC viewer who has appeared on the cable channel’s shows in the past. He is also a Berkshire Hathaway shareholder who has attended the company’s annual meetings.
