A wannabe Los Angeles rapper who calls himself “ColdheartedAC” was busted on Wednesday after allegedly possessing stolen checks worth more than $8.1 million.

Ada William Obayuwana, 31, was one of three defendants charged for possessing over 50 stolen US Treasury checks while attempting to cash them at lenders throughout Southern California.

The rapper was charged with nine counts of bank fraud alongside 28-year-old Albert Tai Vu from Westminster and 31-year-old Cassandra Marie Murrillo from San Diego.

“Obayuwana is also charged with three counts of delivering stolen Treasury checks and one count of aggravated identity theft,” the Justice Department announced Friday.

“Vu is charged with five counts of delivering stolen Treasury checks, four counts of money laundering, and two counts of aggravated identity theft. Murillo is charged with an additional count of delivering stolen Treasury checks.”

From April 2022 to December 2023, the US Treasury checks that the three individuals had stolen contained “tax refunds, veterans’ benefits, and Social Security Administration (SSA) benefits,” the DOJ said. They then allegedly forged endorsements “for the purpose of stealing them” and opened bank accounts to collect the money.

During that period, Vu was able to successfully cash in two tax refund checks for over $772,000 while Obayuwana received nearly $1.7 million from eight checks in December 2023.

The aspiring rapper would frequently flaunt his lavish lifestyle to his nearly 400,000 Instagram followers, even sharing photos of himself alongside legendary boxer Floyd Weather.

Known as “ColdheartedAC” and “AC,” the 31-year-old rapper had over 3,000 YouTube subscribers and received over 194,000 views on one of his songs.

Obayuwana made his initial appearance at a Los Angeles federal court on Wednesday and had his detention hearing on Friday.

He remains in federal custody.
