A social media video that captures what a dog does after he realizes that his owner's cousin is pregnant has melted hearts online.

The viral video, which has been viewed more than 817,000 times since it was first shared to TikTok on December 29, filmed the dog comforting the woman and gently nuzzling her baby bump.

Viewers watched as the dog began getting close to the pregnant woman and sniffing her, before using his snout to sniff and nuzzle her baby bump in what appeared to be both a way to draw attention to the bump and a sign of affection.

The woman put her arms around her cousin's dog and looked towards the camera, her mouth open in disbelief that the family pet had been able to deduce that she's expecting a child.

What Do The Comments Say?

The heartwarming moment has led to an outpouring of emotion in the comments section of the post. Over 300 TikTokers have gushed over the particular affection that Kooper the dog showed to his owner's cousin.

"That's how I found out I was pregnant were my doggos they both came up to me sniffed my stomach I took a test came back positive dogs are our blessing," one user wrote.

Another user added: "He can smell her pregnancy from her scent".

"Aww he can't wait to meet your new lil' human," a third user shared.

"Crazy how he knew. I definitely got extra love that day, I love him," the woman in the video commented.

Can Dog's Sense Pregnancy?

Our furry friends are indeed able to detect human pregnancy, all thanks to the power of their noses. However, whether they decide to show that they've recognized a pregnancy or not is entirely up to the dog and dependent on their own personality.

During pregnancy, the expectant mother's body chemistry and hormones go through major shifts. This can cause her unique scent, the one that the family pet will have learned to associate with her, to change.

"While we can't know for sure the exact moment a dog senses a pregnancy, we do know that not much gets by the canine nose," the American Kennel Club (AKC) says.

"Although your pup can detect a change in scent, it's unlikely he comprehends the reason for the change."

Russ Harstein, a certified behaviorist based in LA, told the AKC that dogs have 60 times as many smell receptors as humans and 40 times as much brainpower dedicated to smell.

This allows them to differentiate and analyze 30,000 to 100,000 aromas, which is where they'll be able to pick up on differences and changes in the people they know.
