Kate Middleton Interest Massively Overshadows US Searches for Trump, Biden

Kate Middleton, the Princess of Wales, made headlines this week for doctoring a family photo, creating more buzz from over the pond than the two presumed 2024 U.S. presidential nominees President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump.

Last Sunday, Kensington Palace released a photo of Middleton with her children Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis to mark Mother's Day in the United Kingdom. A day later, Middleton acknowledged that she edited the image after news agencies, including the Associated Press and Reuters, urged media outlets to remove the image from circulation over concerns it had been manipulated.

The photo controversary comes amid growing conspiracy theories on social media about Middleton's health. In January, Kensington Palace announced that the princess had undergone planned abdominal surgery and that the procedure was "successful." She has not appeared publicly since Christmas Day and will likely not return to public duties until after Easter.

According to a Google Trends chart, on average, Middleton was searched on Google by U.S. users over six times more than Trump and over nine times more than Biden in the past seven days.

It is important to note that the numbers on the graph do not represent absolute search volume numbers, but rather, the data is normalized and presented on a scale of zero to 100.

There was, however, a massive spike in Trump searches last Sunday night when late night talk show host Jimmy Kimmel made a joke about the former president at the Oscars.

Kimmel, who hosted the award show this year, read a review of his performance to the audience, which was written by Trump on his social media platform Truth Social.

"Has there EVER been a WORSE HOST than Jimmy Kimmel at The Oscars. His opening was that of a less than average person trying too hard to be something which he is not, and never can be," the post read, in part.

Kimmel then quipped: "Thank you for watching. I'm surprised you're still up. Isn't it past your jail time?"

The host was referring to the four criminal indictments Trump is currently facing. The former president has pleaded not guilty to all charges and claimed the cases are politically motivated against him.

This year's presidential election is unique in that both presumed nominees have already served in the Oval Office. However, the primary elections haven't garnered as much buzz as other elections since Trump was the GOP frontrunner from the gate and Biden is the incumbent.

According to a The Economist/YouGov poll conducted from March 10 to 12, 42 percent of U.S. adults said they are paying a lot of attention to the election, while 31 percent said they are somewhat paying attention. Meanwhile, 19 percent of adults said they are paying little attention to the campaign season while 8 percent are paying no attention to it. The poll surveyed 1,559 U.S. adult citizens and had a margin of error of plus or minus 3.5 percent.

Newsweek reached out to Trump's and Biden's campaigns via email for comment.
