Southern Nazarene University football player Tyler Ulrich died of a traumatic brain injury and a brain bleed after an on-field collision earlier this month, a coroner’s report obtained by ESPN revealed.

Ulrich, who was 21 years old, was hospitalized after a helmet-to-helmet hit on Oct. 10 and died five days later.

“Our university president, football team and coaches participated in a Celebration of Life service for Tyler last Sunday afternoon in Azle, Texas. The report you mentioned has not been provided to us,” A university spokesperson told the outlet. “Our campus community is faithfully remembering his family, teammates and coaches in our prayers.”

The incident took place during Division II SNU’s game against Ouachita Baptist, which was delayed for roughly 45 minutes as Ulrich was tended to by medical staff.

The school said Ulrich, a sophomore defensive back, had suffered a “traumatic injury” at the time.

“This loss is deeply felt across our campus,” the school wrote in a statement after his passing. “Our hearts are with his family, friends, teammates, and everyone who had the privilege of knowing him. We ask that you join us in lifting them up in prayer during this incredibly difficult time.”

The two teams finished the game, but SNU decided not to play their game the following week.

“Tyler was an outstanding football player and a tremendous man of faith,” Crimson Storm head coach Dustin Hada told ESPN. “He was a great example of quiet strength and a leader in our locker room for sure.”

He is the second college football player to die after an on-field incident this season.

In August, William Jewell College running back MicahJo Barnett died after he suddenly collapsed on the field during a game.
