Cooper Barkate needed one play to announce himself in Death Valley.
On Miami’s first snap from scrimmage Saturday night, quarterback Darian Mensah hit Barkate on a screen pass and took it for a 61-yard touchdown. The score came just 1:55 into the game and set the tone for a 41-13 road win over Clemson that kept the No. 4 Hurricanes unbeaten.
Barkate finished with five catches for 98 yards and a touchdown, leading Miami in receiving and accounting for nearly half of Mensah’s 227 passing yards. His 19.6 yards per catch stood out on a night when the Hurricanes mixed explosive shots with a ground game that produced 192 yards and three touchdowns.
The long score was the only passing touchdown Miami needed.
The senior wide receiver arrived in Coral Gables this offseason after productive stops at Harvard and Duke, where he topped 1,000 yards in each of the past two seasons. Through four games with the Hurricanes, he had already scored three times, but the Clemson night was his clearest statement in an orange-and-green uniform.
The 61-yard strike was the longest play of the game for either side and immediately quieted a stadium that had been waiting for a statement night of its own.
Barkate’s other four catches kept drives alive and forced Clemson’s secondary to account for him vertically even after the early score. He had a nice grab down the sideline in the second half, as Mensah hit him with a back shoulder fade to move the chains. Three of his five receptions were for first downs, too.

— Grant Reacts (@GrantReacts1) October 4, 2026Miami’s passing chart was otherwise balanced. Malachi Toney also had five receptions, but Barkate was the one who shined on Saturday night.
There were some skeptics surrounding Barkate and the slow start to the year. In games like this, he will come to life, and that is exactly what he did.
The performance also came with Miami managing injuries up front. Right tackle Matthew McCoy and right guard Max Buchanan both left at points in the first half, yet the Hurricanes still managed to grind offensively.
At 5-0 overall and 3-0 in the ACC after the win, Miami heads into its bye with Barkate as a proven piece rather than a complementary transfer. Five catches, 98 yards, and a touchdown that opened the night in Death Valley is the kind of line that tends to stick.
Entering the bye week now, Barkate has recorded four touchdowns through five games, while also catching 19 passes for 241 yards.
For a receiver who has produced at every stop, Saturday looked less like a one-off and more like the start of a breakout player in Miami’s lethal passing game.
