Owners Leaving Town Bring Healthy Dog to Be Euthanized, Vet Has Other Ideas

A dog that was taken by his owners to be euthanized has been given a second chance with an animal-rescue owner.

Denny, the 3-year-old American bully, was brought to the vet by his owners with the intention of having him euthanized due to their impending house move. However, there was no medical reason to euthanize Denny. He is perfectly healthy, aside from being completely blind after an injury.

The veterinarian refused to carry out the euthanasia and instead reached out to Chrissy Elder, founder of Forgotten, Now Family, a rescue in Charlotte, North Carolina.

"When I heard about Denny, I knew I had to do something to help," Elder told Newsweek. "No animal deserves to be abandoned, especially one as sweet as Denny."

Elder took the animal in as a foster placement and quickly fell in love with his spirit. She then made the decision to offer him a forever home. "I fell in love fostering him," Elder said. "And now he has a forever home with me."

Each year, 6.3 million pets enter U.S. shelters at an average of 17,260 a day, according to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. The number of dogs and cats taken in by pet shelters hit 46,807 last January, an increase of 1,744 compared to January 2022, 24Petwatch's Shelter Watch Report found.

Around 920,000 surrendered animals are euthanized every year. Shelters are striving to minimize euthanasia rates by promoting adoption campaigns, spaying and neutering programs, and behavior rehabilitation.

Since taking him in, Elder shared Denny's story on TikTok in a video that has quickly captured hearts.

"God bless you for giving him a home. How could an owner even contemplate putting this beautiful friendly dog down," wrote one commenter.

Another person who saw the story on TikTok posted: "Such a precious baby. Thank you for saving him."

"Glad he is happy and safe," added another commenter.

"I love how supportive our 'Tok fam is," Elder said. "Their encouragement and kindness have meant the world to us."

As Denny starts a new chapter and second chance, he has gone from being taken to be euthanized to being put to bed in his own robe, and is now in a loving home with his new owner.
