Ben Rortvedt is still a Dodger.

The catcher was recently designated for assignment by the team to make room for Will Smith, who returned from the injured list after three months away. But Rortvedt cleared waivers and was reassigned to Triple-A Oklahoma City.

Thus, the Dodgers were able to retain the 28-year-old.

The Dodgers faced an injury crisis at catcher last season when Smith and Dalton Rushing landed on the IL. Rortvedt was thrust into the starting catcher role in September 2025 and impressively managed the Dodgers’ pitching staff.

Rortvedt went 3-for-6 with an RBI and two runs during the wild-card series against the Reds, with manager Dave Roberts calling the catcher an “unsung hero.”

The Dodgers have DFA’d Rortvedt twice this season, once before the season and most recently on Sept. 1. The team sent him a heartfelt message when he was notified about the roster decision.

“Brandon Gomes, our GM, reached out and informed him that we were gonna DFA him and told him how grateful we were,” Roberts said. “Ben’s a great teammate, he’s a major league player, and I’ll always be grateful because he helped us win a championship last year. Great guy.”

Only this time, the Dodgers were able to keep Rortvedt in the organization as no team claimed him off waivers. He will provide the Dodgers with additional catching depth.

The Dodgers reacquired Rortvedt from the Mets in August ahead of the trade deadline. It appears it won’t be as short a stint for Rortvedt as previously thought as he remains with the back-to-back World Series champions.
