Thanksgiving falls on November 24 this year—it's a time when millions of people across the United States celebrate and express their gratitude for their blessings.
Each year, it is observed on the fourth Thursday in November, typically by large family gathering to have a meal that has a roast turkey at the center of it. The turkey is usually accompanied with stuffing with onions and celery, mashed potatoes, gravy, green beans, dinner rolls, corn, pumpkin pie and cranberry sauce. But each family puts its own spin on the Thanksgiving meal.
Thanksgiving Day has been recognized as a federal holiday since December 1941, meaning that many government offices and public institutions are closed.
Many stores are closed but some remain open. Banks are not legally required to close on federal holidays designated by the U.S. Federal Reserve system, but they usually do, or they operate on reduced hours.
Here are some wishes, messages and greetings you can send to your loved ones on Thanksgiving.

Bill Carrigan, professor of history at Rowan University, has shared some of his Thanksgiving greetings with Newsweek.
"Dear Mom and Dad, Happy Thanksgiving! I wish that I could be there with the family today. We had a great time when we last were able to come a few years ago. Missing Thanksgiving dinner (and watching the football game with my brother) is one of the sad things about my living so far away from home. We hope that you have a wonderful time and hope that we can make it next year. Best, Bill," Carrigan told Newsweek.
"Dear Julia, Happy Thanksgiving! I knew that we would finally miss a Thanksgiving together now that you are all grown up. I hope that you are well and have a nice meal with some of your friends. Be sure to give us a call later! Best, Dad," he added.
