Donovan Mitchell and James Harden will benefit from a full season together as they look to put the Cleveland Cavaliers back on the title-contender map.

After pairing up midseason and making a playoff run, the star guards signed long-term extensions and focused on building chemistry through offseason bonding, including a training camp in Spain.

So, how can they become the elite duo that can lead the Cavs back to the Eastern Conference Finals and right their wrongs from last season?

Stagger the minutes in order to give them as much usage as possible

Under head coach Kenny Atkinson, the Cavaliers plan to start Mitchell and Harden together while heavily staggering their minutes.

Mitchell will typically check out midway through the first quarter, allowing Harden to take over as the primary playmaker and floor general for the second unit.

This strategy serves two key purposes: It helps preserve Harden, who is entering his 18th NBA season, by keeping his regular-season workload between 28 and 34 minutes per game, while maintaining their individual usage rates at an optimal level of around 33.5%.

It also reduces Mitchell's workload, helping protect him from overuse and potential late-season injuries.

That then eases the pressure on who gets the shot creation. The Cavaliers must develop more independent playmaking throughout the roster to avoid becoming overly reliant on Harden’s shot creation, as they did during the 2026 playoffs when Mitchell’s production fluctuated.

Mitchell’s willingness to facilitate early in games can unlock frontcourt stars Jarrett Allen and Evan Mobley, making them more involved offensive threats. Their increased presence forces opposing defenses to collapse inside, creating more space on the perimeter for Mitchell and Harden to exploit.

If they achieve that, then the duo will fully trust each other

Seasoned veterans like Mitchell and Harden know how to make the playoffs. The duo has made the postseason in every year of their NBA careers, 17 seasons for Harden and nine for Mitchell.

From their first game together after the trade in February, Cavs coach Kenny Atkinson says he has seen a natural chemistry between the two, one that clicked instantly.

"This league is a lot about when you get a player in their career," Atkinson said back in May. "I think we got James at the right time."

The partnership thrives when Harden and Mitchell embrace their contrasting playing styles rather than compete for the same roles. Harden’s methodical, calculated approach to pick-and-roll play complements Mitchell’s explosive scoring and off-ball movement.

Mitchell has also publicly pushed back against negative media narratives surrounding Harden, welcoming him as a veteran presence who can share the offensive workload and ease the scoring burden Mitchell previously shouldered largely on his own.
