Woman Questioned for Bringing Dog on Flight, but They Didn't Need To Worry

A video of a dog on a plane appearing to be in a blissful deep slumber has gone viral on TikTok.

The clip was posted by Lou the Chi Chi (@louthechichi) and has had 1.4 million views since it was first shared on March 19. A message overlaid reads: "PEOPLE: Omg... you're bringing your dog on a 4-hour flight? Won't she get agitated and disturb others?"

The footage, which was captured on a flight from Montreal, Canada, to Florida, shows Lou on a plane, snuggled up in a blanket and asleep in different positions at every hour of the flight. Tyscia Audy, 29, told Newsweek that her pup Lou is a five-year-old chihuahua weighing 4.5 lbs. Audy is the owner of the pet apparel and accessory online store ShopLousCloset.com.

Some users on TikTok were quick to question why the dog was allowed to be out of her carrier during the flight.

However, Audy said Lou is her "medical service dog, which is why she was approved to stay on my lap for the flight."

The dog owner, who is based in Montreal and Florida, said: "I'm actually terrified of flying, but Lou's calmness eases that fear. As long as I am by her side, I feel safe and vice versa."

Can I Bring My Dog on a Plane?

The U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) notes: "Airlines are required to recognize dogs as service animals and accept them for transport on flights to, within and from the United States."

But what about pets?

The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) says individual airlines are allowed to decide whether their passengers can bring pets on board. Flyers should contact their carrier before traveling to confirm the airline's policy on pets.

If your airline doesn't allow you to bring your pet on board, it will need to travel in the cargo hold.

The International Air Transport Association says: "Do not worry, cats and dogs actually travel better this way because it is quieter and they will rest in a darkened environment. Despite all the fears about airline pet cargo travel, millions of animals are carried safely every year."

According to the FAA: "If an airline does allow you to bring your pet into the cabin, we consider your pet container to be carry-on baggage and you must follow all carry-on baggage rules."

Your pet container must meet the following requirements, as outlined by the FAA:

  • Be small enough to fit underneath the seat without blocking any person's path to the main aisle of the airplane.
  • Be stowed properly before the last passenger entry door to the airplane is closed in order for the airplane to leave the gate.
  • Remain properly stowed the entire time the airplane is moving on the airport surface, and for take off and landing.
  • Owners must follow flight attendant instructions regarding the proper stowage of their pet container.

'Better Behaved Than Most Humans'

Audy told Newsweek: "Lou and I travel a lot together. We've been to Paris, Italy, California and Florida countless times. She always sleeps through flights, no matter how long they are."

In the latest viral clip, the dog owner placed her neck pillow on her lap and Lou "naturally fell asleep in this adorable position" for three hours. Audy said she "couldn't focus on doing anything else but stare at her, as she was too adorable."

Users on TikTok adored the sleepy dog in the viral clip, such as Brooknava🇦🇺 who said the pup was "Better behaved than most humans."

"My chihuahua slept through a 15 hour flight, more well behaved than most children," said nikie78.

Caelum_21 noted: "Even if disturbs who wouldn't like this cutie."

Veronica simply said "Sleepy baby" and Kitty1013 wrote: "I'd want to cuddle her the whole 4 hrs, SHARE THE LOVE!"

"I would actually cry with happiness if I had a dog sitting next to me on a flight," wrote @onceuponawitchinghour.

Samantha noted: "The JOY and scream I woulda scrumped if you were sitting next to me with Lou!!!"
