Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.) wasted no time in attempting to capitalize on the Department of Homeland (DHS) raid of her Washington, DC, home, slamming it as “ludicrous” in a fundraising email to supporters on Monday night.
“Please don’t click away,” read the email fired off by Omar’s congressional campaign. “As many of you now know, Trump’s DHS agents raided Ilhan Omar’s house this morning in a highly unusual move that is being widely condemned as a dangerous and authoritarian attack on a political opponent.”
Her campaign accused Trump of “targeting Ilhan since he first got back into office,” denouncing the search of the congresswoman’s home as “a serious escalation by this fascist government” and “an attempt to intimidate, silence, and punish Ilhan Omar and our entire progressive movement” ahead of the midterm elections.
“We have an obligation to fight back against this ludicrous, partisan investigation, and show that we will not let Trump’s abuse of power go unchecked,” the email, obtained by multiple outlets, continued. “We have to organize for a massive progressive victory at the ballot box so we can take back Congress from the MAGA far-right.”
Omar’s campaign asked supporters to “stand with Ilhan as Trump brings the immense power of the federal government down on her” and “chip in $10 or any amount you can afford today.”
“We have to be ready for anything that comes our way, and every dollar we can raise goes a long way,” the fundraising pitch continued.
Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) executed a search warrant of Omar’s home as part of an ongoing criminal fraud investigation into the Somalia-born congresswoman’s immigration paperwork.
In her first public comment after the raid, Omar tweeted that she was “OK” and called the search “an attempt to target political enemies and weaponize federal law enforcement.”
“I will not be silenced,” the congresswoman added.
A spokesperson for Omar maintains she has “done nothing wrong.”
Omar is running against Republican John Nagel in Minnesota’s solidly blue 5th Congressional District.
