Bhayshul Tuten is making it increasingly difficult to wonder whether the Jacksonville Jaguars can move forward without Travis Etienne. The second-year running back has been putting together a solid training camp, and his speed is still the trait that jumps off the page.

Tuten showed that explosiveness throughout the offseason program, reminding everyone why he was such a big part of the Virginia Tech offense. He has the kind of speed that can turn an ordinary run into a big play in a hurry.

But, still, there's another part of his game that's becoming just as important.

Tuten's work in pass protection is starting to stand out, and that's a big deal for his chances of becoming a regular part of Jacksonville's offense. John Shipley of Sports Illustrated highlighted Tuten's performance in several pass-protection reps, an area that can determine whether a running back stays on the field when the offense is throwing the ball.

That's a positive development for Tuten. Being able to run effectively is one thing. Showing coaches that they can trust you when you're asked to protect the quarterback gives you another way to earn playing time.

That could be especially important for Tuten as he prepares to share the workload with Chris Rodriguez.

The Jaguars don't necessarily need Tuten to handle every carry to make a real impact. If he can continue showing the burst he's displayed throughout the offseason while also proving reliable in pass protection, there's a pretty clear path to him getting lots of chances. That could make the transition away from Etienne a little less daunting.

Tuten has already addressed one of the biggest questions surrounding him by showing that his big-play ability is real. Now he's demonstrating that there's more to his game than simply being the fast guy in the backfield.
