An inside look at Sunday’s Jets-Lions Week 3 matchup in Detroit:

Marquee matchup

Lions edge rusher Aidan Hutchinson vs. Jets tackles Armond Membou and Olu Fashanu

The Jets pass protection held up pretty well last week against the Packers … until it didn’t. Geno Smith was sacked four times, with two of those coming in overtime.

The Jets now face one of the best pass rushers in all of football in Hutchinson.

He has three sacks already this season and has a sack in six straight games. He had 14.5 sacks last year.

“Aidan has always been that guy,” Jets quarterback Geno Smith said. “He’s great around the football. He’s had interceptions, sacks, forced fumbles, so he’s always a guy that you have to be mindful of.”

Membou and Fashanu have had strong starts to the season. Fashanu is currently No. 2 among tackles rated by Pro Football Focus. Membou had a rare bad game last week against the Packers but looked solid against the Titans in Week 1. Membou said he relished the chance to face Hutchinson.

“I feel like a player like him, you’ve got to raise your standards when you’re going against a guy as talented as him,” Mebou said. “It’s definitely going to be a great matchup and I’m really looking forward to it.”

Fashanu said Hutchinson’s “motor” is what stands out when you watch him on film.

“He never quits throughout the entire game,” Fashanu said. “I feel like as a pass rusher, he has everything. He has speed, power, he’s really good with his hands. I feel like he does a good job at attacking the weaknesses of tackles. He’s a great player.”

Four downs

D up: The Jets have the No. 1 defense in football through two weeks in terms of yards allowed. They have been stingy, giving up just 197 yards per game.

They have held their first two opponents to fewer than 200 yards, the first time any team has done that to start a season since the 2006 Ravens.

This will be the stiffest test they have faced.

The Lions are loaded on offense with quarterback Jared Goff leading the way and running back Jahmyr Gibbs and wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown ready to make a big play every time they touch the ball.

“This will be one of the most explosive groups that we’ll go against, to me, probably all year,” Jets coach Aaron Glenn said. “When you think about the running back, who I know very, very well, man you’re talking about as a runner, as a receiver, line up out wide, in the backfield, he can do a number of things.

“Then [receiver Jameson Williams] out on the edge, being able to take the top off the defense, and then you have [St. Brown] who’s extremely tough, rugged, hard-nosed, make all the catches in the middle of the field, and then you have [tight end Sam] LaPorta, who’s back to being himself when I was there, of being able to really stretch the defense and make plays. And then Goff, one of the most accurate quarterbacks I’ve ever been around.”

Zero turnovers: The Jets have not turned the ball over yet on offense. This is the first time since 1971 they have started a season with no giveaways in the first two games. Their struggles to get takeaways has been well documented.

Geno Smith AP

They have gone 19 games without an interception, but the offense is now protecting the ball. Geno Smith led the NFL with 17 interceptions last year with the Raiders. He bristled at the idea that he has changed anything this year to cut down on interceptions.

“You guys got to watch film,” said Smith, who did not throw an interception in the first two games. “You say interceptions, you got to watch film, you can’t just go off the stat sheet. I think that’s what a lot of people do, right? I’m a guy, like I told you guys, I’m very sound in my decision-making.”

Shaky secondary: The Jets offense should be able to score some points against a Lions secondary that is banged up.

Detroit is playing without star safeties Brian Branch and Kerby Joseph to start the year. Now, they lost safety Avonte Maddox to a season-ending foot injury last week and safety Thomas Harper to an ankle injury.

The Lions gave up 30 points to the Saints after halftime in a Week 1, 31-30 overtime win. Last week the Bills put up 41 points on the Lions. The Lions defense ranks 31st in points allowed, total defense and passing defense.

Thin at receiver: The Jets’ depth at wide receiver was something that was praised as a strength this summer. Now, it’s getting tested.

Omar Cooper Jr. and Arian Smith are both on injured reserve. Adonai Mitchell suffered a finger injury in practice Thursday and was limited Friday with a large wrap on his right hand.

Thank you

The healthy receivers are Garrett Wilson, Isaiah Williams and Malik McClain, an undrafted rookie who just signed off the practice squad.

The Jets will add one more receiver from the practice squad, but they will be hurting if Mitchell can’t play. They are also without tight end Mason Taylor (thumb).

Costello’s call

The Jets blew one last week against the Packers and could use a bounce-back game. I just don’t think the Lions are the right opponent to get it.

Detroit has too much firepower for the Jets to keep up with. It will be a close in the fourth quarter, but the Lions make a few more plays than the Jets.
