The first meeting between Manchester City and Coventry City since 2002 takes place at the Etihad Stadium on Saturday, as the two teams meet in Gameweek 3 of the 2026–27 Premier League season.

The pair most recently clashed in a second tier bout 24 years ago, which City, led by Kevin Keegan, won 4–2.

Coventry slipped out of the top flight the year before, and have only just celebrated their return. Frank Lampard guided the Sky Blues to Championship glory last season, but his team have endured a tough start to their Premier League comeback.

While a 3–0 defeat at Arsenal was to be expected, their 1–0 home loss to fellow newly promoted side Hull City already felt like a big blow at this early juncture. A trip to the Etihad was the last thing Lampard wanted in the aftermath, but the beast that is the Premier League will continue to throw up such daunting tests for the newbies.

Man City enter the round atop the division after winning emphatically at Crystal Palace last time out. That followed a less convincing win against Bournemouth, which required a second-half turnaround.

While so many are backing Arsenal to go back-to-back, City’s expensive but swift rebuild has sparked a rethink.

Cityzens Purr on Home Soil

After fluffing his lines on the opening weekend, Erling Haaland got his season underway with a brace against Palace, while Rayan Cherki continued his productive start to the new campaign.

The positional rigidity that defined Maresca’s Chelsea team hasn’t yet come to pass in Manchester, with the Cityzens performing with commendable fluidity and cohesion in possession. There’s certainly scope to get at them in transition, especially if Joško Gvardiol continues his demanding role in all phases from left back, but Coventry are unlikely to be the team to expose the potential cracks in City’s armor.

There have been many beatdowns at the Etihad Stadium over the years, particularly when Guardiola’s side were peaking, and this has the hallmarks of a classic drubbing at the start of a new City era.

• Man City’s dominance vs. newly promoted teams: The Cityzens are unbeaten in 30 Premier League matches against newly promoted sides, winning 27 of these duels. Their last defeat against such an opponent came against Marcelo Bielsa’s Leeds United in April 2021.
• Early Coventry concerns: Coventry were miles off the pace at the Emirates Stadium, then caught in transition to lose at home to Hull. The signs so far have been concerning, and there’s scope for the visitors to simply be blown away, as they were by Arsenal, at the home of the Premier League’s once-supreme force.
• City’s new toys: Scepticism was rife entering the season, but the City faithful are ebullient once more. This looks like an exciting Cityzens outfit, and there’s set to be more debuts this weekend. The feel around the place matters, and if the atmosphere’s purring in Manchester on Saturday, expect Maresca’s players to feel it. There’s a grand sense of anticipation, and a newfound belief that this roster can compete for the title.

Despite the additions of Enzo Fernández and Iliman Ndiaye, there’s no reason for Maresca not to name the same starting XI from the 4–1 victory at Selhurst Park.

With Jérémy Doku nursing a calf injury and Matheus Nunes still a fitness concern, Maresca has a similar contingent of players available. Fernández will be eased in, as too will Ayyoub Bouaddi, who made his debut for the club off the bench against Crystal Palace.

Nico O’Reilly could thus retain his midfield berth, while Joško Gvardiol will once again perform a marauding role from left back. It looks like the Croatian international will operate as Maresca’s Swiss Army knife this season.

Phil Foden performed well enough despite being shunted out to the right flank on Matchday 2, with much of his best work arriving when he was able to drift into central areas. He’ll work opposite Antoine Semenyo, who teed up Haaland’s first in south London.

Lampard has nine new faces to bed into his Championship-winning roster. Those with Premier League experience, including striker Taiwo Awoniyi, are particularly valuable.

Awoniyi started last week’s defeat to Hull and should retain his place ahead of Ellis Simms, who toiled to earn little reward against Arsenal on opening night.

Caleb Yirenkyi should be an important addition in midfield, but the Sky Blues are yet to see the best of the Ghanaian at the start of his Coventry career.

On the injury front, USMNT international Haji Wright is sidelined with a muscle injury, while Kaine Kesler-Hayden and Luke Woolfenden are expected to return next month from hamstring and knee injuries, respectively.
