It all started on set. Gina Rodriguez and her husband Joe LoCicero first met on a 2016 episode of Jane the Virgin — the show that shot her to stardom — but they didn’t start dating until months later.
In a May 2017 interview on Live With Kelly and Ryan, the actress noted that the New Jersey native didn’t make a move right away. In fact, it wasn’t until six months after their onset meet-cute that they ran into each other at a boxing gym.
“Do you think he tracked you down?” cohost Ryan Seacrest asked, to which the NYU alum joked, “Yes!”
Shortly thereafter, in January 2017, the pair made their first red carpet appearance at that year’s SAG Awards. Since then, LoCicero and Rodriguez have supported each other at numerous events, including when the I Want You Back actress sat in the front row to watch her partner become the California State Middleweight amateur Muay Thai Champion in June 2018.
One month later, the couple raised eyebrows with a vacation snap that showed off a large diamond sparkler on Rodriguez’s left finger. In August 2018, the Awake performer exclusively confirmed to Us Weekly that she was engaged.
“I have a very, very special man in my life. I am engaged. You’re the first people that I’ve told,” she gushed to Us at the time. “I am marrying a feminist. I am marrying a man that is incredible and loving and understanding and kind and patient. I’m marrying a really incredible human being. That what it is. I met a human that like, knows he’s a human.”
The pair made things official in May 2019 in an intimate ceremony. The Kajillionaire actress wore a white satin Pronovias gown before changing into a second dress for the reception. In the video from their special day, both Rodriguez and LoCicero appeared to get emotional as the CW alum made her way down the aisle.
“Thank you to my mother in law for the wedding of my dreams. And the village that helped her!” Rodriguez captioned the video from her nuptials via Instagram.
In July 2022, nearly three years after tying the knot, the couple announced they were expecting their first child together.
“This birthday hits different ❤️,” the Lost Ollie actress captioned an Instagram montage, including footage of the pair looking at a positive pregnancy test and crying.

Rodriguez and LoCicero first met on the the set of Jane the Virgin in early 2016. LoCicero played a Don Quixote impersonator/stripper who surprised the Chicago native's character Jane while she was giving a speech to prospective new students at the college where she worked.
It wasn’t until six months later, however, that the two began dating after running into each other at a boxing gym.
Engagement rumors began to swirl after fans pointed out a ring on Rodriguez’s finger in a July 2018 vacation photo. One month later, the Carmen Sandiego voice actress exclusively confirmed to Us that she was a bride-to-be.
Shortly after announcing her engagement, the TV star couldn’t help but gush about her man in her cover interview for Cosmopolitan’s February 2019 issue.
"Dating Joe was a new experience for me because I put myself first," Rodriguez said. "For so long, I put every man in front of me. As a successful woman, it is so hard because of our cultural norms that, like, the man has to be the breadwinner! And the man has to be the more powerful one. It was so difficult for me to find a man who didn’t want me to dim my light for his ego."
The couple made things official in the spring in an intimate wedding. In a video of the nuptials shared via Instagram, Rodriguez gave a shoutout to her Jane the Virgin costar Justin Baldoni for initiating the ceremony, and her brother-in-law Mike for performing at the event.
The Netflix star concluded: “May 4th, 2019 was absolute MAGIC. To my husband Joseph, I am yours forever. ❤️."
Rodriguez celebrated three years with her beau with a sweet Instagram tribute, showing photos of their different vacations together. In February 2018, the Filly Brown performer opened up to Self about her chronic Hashimoto’s disease and how LoCicero has helped her cope.
"[He] has really helped me have a healthier perspective on [weight], that stupid number that can destroy us and feel like it’s equivalent to our self-worth," she said in her cover interview with the outlet. "This love is so easy."
Rodriguez shared a touching Instagram montage for her birthday which featured a sweet surprise: she and LoCicero were expecting their first child together.
The athlete, for his part, also shared a touching tribute to his wife that day, writing, “Wherever you go my heart follows. Happy Birthday my Goddess.” The Diary of a Future President producer replied, “Me and baby love you, papa.”
"My husband is training to be my doula. He's really next level," the then-pregnant actress told Entertainment Tonight about preparing for her first child. "He's magical. He's definitely the better half, so I'm hoping that he'll just go on in there and pull our baby out."
The Not Dead Yet star seemingly confirmed the arrival of her first child after she debuted her postpartum body during a March 18 walk with her infant, according to photos published by the Daily Mail. Rodriguez and LoCicero did not immediately share the child’s name, birth date or sex.
