Wedding Guest's Method to Fix Unsightly Tan Applauded—'Attention to Detail'

A wedding guest's quick thinking has received applause from social media users as she averted a tanning disaster days before her older sister's ceremony.

The now viral TikTok video, posted by Esther McCoy, shows the student from Melbourne, Australia, using a makeup brush and fake tan to fill in a watch-shaped tan line on her left wrist ahead of her sister's wedding, where she was set to be the maid of honor.

Speaking to Newsweek, McCoy explained how her tan line came to exist: "We've just come out of summer here, and the watch only ever comes off for formal occasions. The mixture of being outside running during the summer or just enjoying the sunshine meant that the tan line had gotten ridiculously prominent."

The tanning conundrum was one McCoy had been planning for, but after she failed to find suitable jewelry to cover the harsh line, she turned to a fake tan in a last-ditch attempt to even out her skin tone.

She said: "It was kind of an ongoing joke in my family leading up to the wedding that we would have to fake tan it, but I think I always believed that I would find a nice watch or bracelet to wear. However, I had no such luck, and nothing seemed to cover it, so fake tanning it was.

"I usually wouldn't be too bothered by the tan line, but considering I was the maid of honor for my sister, I had thought it would be better that it wasn't in all of her photos. This was the first time I tried the hack, so I was pretty nervous for the results."

To ensure the color matched her natural tan as closely as possible, McCoy decided to layer the product for a deeper color, following the surprising success of her initial try.

"On night one, we did the first layer, which I washed off after about an hour and a half because we didn't do a good job of staying within the lines, and I thought we had made a massive mistake," McCoy said.

She continued: "When I woke up in the morning, it wasn't perfect by any means, but it was better. That night, we decided to do a second layer (and made sure to stay within the lines which helped a lot) and washed it off after a couple of hours."

Although McCoy said that, up close, the results weren't as even as they appeared, she added that the fake tan served well as a quick fix for her sister's special day.

"When you looked at it properly, you could definitely see a difference in the fake and natural tan. However, it was so much better than having a tan line that literally glowed," she said.

McCoy added: "Our goal was only to ever mute the tan rather than perfectly cover it, so we felt like it was the perfect solution. No one at the wedding noticed, and the bride was very happy with it, so it was definitely a win."

What Do the Comments Say?

In the comments section of the viral video, which has received 91,000 views on TikTok, users praised McCoy for her commitment to looking picture-perfect for the wedding, especially given her role as maid of honor.

"This is the kind of attention to detail every bride wants," one user wrote.

Another added, "Okay but thank you for not wearing the smart watch to a wedding!"

Other users shared their own stories and hacks for fixing watch-induced tan lines.

"I put a notification in my calendar a month before my wedding to take my watch off," one bride commented. "Called off my wedding, but at least my tan was good."

Another commenter wrote: "When I was MOH, the bride had a corsage made for me to cover the Apple Watch tan. Worked like a charm."
