Joe Biden Issues Desperate Plea to Latino Voters

Joe Biden made his most direct plea to Latino voters yet during a campaign visit to Arizona on March 19, as he rallied a base that could prove vital to his reelection bid in November.

The president said that Latino voters were the reason he defeated Donald Trump in 2020, and he urged them to support him again in this year's election.

Speaking to voters at a Mexican restaurant in Phoenix, Biden said: "You're the reason why, in large part, I beat Donald Trump. Let's beat him again."

"I need you badly," he continued, adding, "Kamala and I desperately need your help because there are only about six or seven states that are going to determine the outcome of this election. They are toss-up states; this is one of them."

Biden said the upcoming election was not a referendum on him, but a choice "between me and a guy named Trump." He referenced the language Trump used when launching his 2016 presidential campaign, saying, "He called Latinos criminals, drug dealers and rapists."

"Now he says immigrants are poisoning the blood of our country. What the hell is he talking about," Biden continued. He added, "The reason we are as good as we are is because we are the most diverse country in the world."

Newsweek has contacted Donald Trump's campaign for comment outside of normal working hours.

Biden is on a three-day visit to Nevada, Arizona and Texas, which coincides with the launch of his campaign's "Latinos con Biden-Harris" (Latinos With Biden-Harris) organizing initiative, with campaign adverts now running in English and Spanish.

In interviews on Spanish-language radio Tuesday, Biden criticized Trump's rhetoric about migrants, including calling them "animals" and pledging to carry out mass deportations.

"We have to stop this guy. We can't let this happen. We are a nation of immigrants," Biden told Univision's El Bueno, La Mala y El Feo (The Good, the Bad and the Ugly).

"This guy despises Latinos. I understand Latino values," Biden said, adding, "We just celebrated St. Patrick's Day. I hope you're not offended by my saying this, but you know, the thing about the Irish who came here, they're about family, they're about faith, they're about decency, and that's exactly what the Latino community is all about."

Biden beat Trump narrowly in Arizona and Nevada in the 2020 presidential election, and early polling indicates that the vote in these swing states may likewise be tight this year. Recent polling data from Noble Predictive Insights showed Trump leading Biden by seven points in Nevada (40 percent to 33 per cent). A Fox News poll also put Trump ahead by four points in Arizona.

An AP-NORC poll conducted in February found that 38 percent of U.S. adults approved of Biden's handling of the presidency, which dropped to 36 percent among Hispanic adults.
