A New York City Carvel took a customer’s request for a customized birthday message too literally, leading to a “hilarious” verbatim inscription atop the ice cream cake.
The hysterical message came about after casting agent Chelsi Kern ordered a classic Fudgie the Whale cake, she said in an Oct. 3 Threads post.
Kern had asked that the cake, a childhood favorite of husband Matthew Bennett’s, cheekily read “RUN” in celebration for his birthday.
A receipt Kern posted showed instructions for the message on the receipt, requesting that “RUN” be written “(BIG, all caps, creepy if possible)[.]”
However, instead of receiving a big, creepy inscription of “RUN” on top of the chocolate whale, the cake decorator took the instructions much more literally.
The delicious whale cake was instead verbosely decorated, featuring spelling errors, to incorrectly read: “Run & Big, All Caps Creepy if Possiple.”
Kern found the mistake comical, saying she “was wheezing so hard” and “literally collapsed.”
But Kern’s husband was a little slower to see the humor in the cake’s message.
“But then the more he read it and read it again, and I showed him the receipt. He was dying,” Kern told Today.com.
Carvel did not respond to a request for comment.
While some friends suggested Kern contact Carvel for a refund due to the botched cake message, she declined, calling the mistake “hilarious.”
“Because this happened, we have this deeply funny story that us and our friends are going to know forever,” Kern told the outlet.
“I think it’s easy to get mad and annoyed when mistakes happen, but it’s so much more fun to lean into it and find the joy in it.”
