An adorable bulldog who was brought to a shelter weighing the same amount as a baby hippo has dropped about 18lbs and found a loving “forever home.”
Peggy-Sue was a whopping 72lbs — roughly 30lbs overweight — when she arrived at RSPCA West Hatch Animal Centre in Somerset, England in July 2025.
The ailing pet was so large she couldn’t walk more than a few steps without collapsing, the shelter said. She also suffered from ingrown claws, infected skin folds because of her size and overheating.
“It was awful to see her struggle with every day movement and we had to carry her in a crate from the van to her kennel,” said RSPCA Deputy Centre Manager Anita Clark, according to Nonstop Local.
“She really needed some care and attention.”
Peggy-Sue’s first foster family was determined to help the chunky dog reclaim her health — and put her on a diet and exercise regimen to get her on track.
Meanwhile, more good news for Peggy-Sue came when she was adopted by couple Emmie and Andy, who were healing from the loss of their dog Jack Jack.
They continued to gradually increase her movement to get her into shape — and today she weighs about 54lbs.
The shelter said that she “loves nothing more than coastal walks and trips to the beach with her new brother, Mr. Woo!
“It really does take a village, and we are so thankful to everyone involved in Peggy-Sue’s journey, which resulted in an incredibly happy ending.”
