The Baltimore Ravens have lots of players looking to make an impression during training camp, but one young defender is already starting to get almost all the looks.

Malaki Starks could be that player.

Entering his second NFL season, Starks is looking to build on a rookie year that came with the usual ups and downs of a first-year safety trying to adjust to the speed of the league. That's not exactly an easy job.

Safety is a position that demands a player who can process information quickly, communicate with teammates, and avoid making mistakes that can turn into huge plays for the offense. Very few rookies step into that role and immediately look comfortable.

Even Ravens All-Pro Kyle Hamilton knows that.

That's why writing off Starks after one season would be a mistake. The talent that made him a highly regarded prospect is still there, and now he has another offseason to slow the game down and become more comfortable in Baltimore's defense.

The early signs have been really good. During minicamp, the feedback surrounding Starks was consistently positive. He has the athletic ability. He's physical. He's the guy the Ravens were hoping for when they brought him in, and he now has more experience to lean on as he enters his second season.

The arrival of head coach Jesse Minter could also help. Minter has built a reputation for developing defensive backs, and getting the most out of talented players in the secondary has been one of his strengths.

For Starks, the chance is there.
