Grandparents aren't known for being fans of piercings and tattoos—and sometimes their reactions to seeing them can be quite dramatic, as one woman found out after sharing a video that has drawn a mixed response online.

In a video posted on TikTok by a user called Jinnyvo, a grandmother can be seen dabbing tears from her eyes with a napkin. As the camera pans around, her granddaughter shows off her multiple ear piercings.

A caption reads: "My grandma because she found out my sister has more than one piercing."

Underneath the video, Jinnyvo wrote: "She's a little dramatic—at least my sister took her face piercings out."

In the comments, people described their own similar experiences. One TikTok user, Shanielle, wrote: "My mother didn't talk to me for two whole months after my navel piercing. She cried when she found out."

Another person, Mika, said: "I used to have an industrial piercing and my mom had a mental breakdown and called me shameful and disrespectful so I took it out."

Someone else called Trang added: "My dad saw mine and he said, 'For every hole in your ear is a hole in my heart.'"

Others commented on what they thought was an overreaction.

Zay asked: "Why is the older generation so extraordinarily dramatic about the smallest/most insignificant things?" and JoeysMuckSMR wrote: "Bro, it's not even that bad. It looks great lol."

Yng commented: "It's like the end of the world for them."

Joysboy was more understanding, writing, "OK, but that reaction is actually so sad. Her heart is broken."

Susan heagy back the gran, saying, "I understand. I cried when my son got his tongue pieced."

Regardless of personal opinions on piercings and tattoos, they are a common sight. A large majority of U.S. adults say society has become more accepting of people with tattoos in recent decades, according to a Pew Research Center survey. Furthermore, 32 percent of adults have a tattoo themselves, including 22 percent who have more than one.

The data found that 38 percent of women have at least one tattoo, compared with 27 percent of men. This includes 56 percent of women aged 18 to 29 and 53 percent of women aged 30 to 49. Adults under the age of 50 are more likely to have a tattoo.

The most commonly cited reason for getting a tattoo is to honor or remember someone or something, with 69 percent of tattooed adults saying this is a reason they got any of their tattoos. Just under half (47 percent) say they got a tattoo to make a statement about what they believe, and 32 percent say they got at least one to improve their personal appearance.

A study published in the Journal of Organizational Behavior in 2022 found that attitudes towards tattoos in the workplace are also changing. The research found negative stereotypes were not prevalent and in a field experiment, tattooed employees had just as many sales as their untattooed counterparts.

The findings also showed that in some white-collar jobs involving artistic skills, customers viewed tattooed employees more favorably and as being more competent than employees who did not have tattoos.
