The Los Angeles Rams parted ways with kicker Harrison Mevis on Tuesday, one day after he missed two field goals in the Rams’ overtime loss to the Buffalo Bills on Monday Night Football.
Mevis has one of the funniest nicknames in football: “The Thiccer Kicker,” which is a reference to Mevis being larger than a prototypical kicker in the NFL.
Along with this news of Mevis’ release came word of his replacement: Blake Grupe, the former New Orleans Saints and Indianapolis Colts kicker who was on the New York Jets’ practice squad.
Mevis is officially listed at 6’0″ and 245 pounds. Grupe, on the other hand, is listed at 5’7″ and 156 pounds.
That means an 89-pound weight difference between the Rams’ former and current kickers.
Social media has been cracking jokes about the difference between these two kickers’ sizes.
“The thinner kicker,” X user @chloeg_13 wrote in a response to a video about Grupe.
“The thicker kicker wasn’t kicking it so they went to a light weight,” added @dubbed90s.
“McVay said ‘We’re going to go completely the other way with this,'” wrote @TheOnePrideGuy
Jokes aside, Rams fans do not care about their kicker’s size or weight, so long as they make the kicks they’re supposed to.
All eyes will be on whether Grupe can do so when Los Angeles faces the Arizona Cardinals on Sunday.
