The Boston Red Sox were met with some criticism in April when they fired manager Alex Cora less than a month into the MLB season. It took them a while, but the Red Sox ultimately found their footing under interim manager Chad Tracy.

Another Boston manager lost his job over the weekend when former Red Sox pitcher Keith Foulke was fired by the Boston Hunters of the Women's Professional Baseball League.

If Cora's dismissal seemed premature, Foulke's was even more rash. The Hunters have played only four games, going 1-3.

In an interview with the Boston Globe, the pitcher who shut the door on Boston's first baseball championship in 86 years gave his side of the story.

Foulke said the issue stemmed from the fact that he was continuing to live in Arizona while managing the team in Springfield, Illinois, where all four WPBL teams are based in the league's inaugural season.

"After the first couple weeks of the season, (the league) decided that (commuting back and forth) wasn't enough," Foulke told Emma Healy, "and what they said was I was losing the room."

Jemile Weeks, a veteran of six major league seasons, including two with the Red Sox, took over for Foulke on Aug. 9.

Justine Siegal told The Globe that the decision to fire Foulke "was really about just the connection he had with the players and finding a coach who was better with a younger team."

That echoed a report Monday from The IX Sports, which cited multiple unnamed sources who called the firing a "baseball decision."

Foulke told The Globe he received approval from the WPBL to commute back and forth from his Arizona home, which caused him to miss two days of training camp and one regular season practice.

Whether that contributed directly or indirectly to his firing could be a matter of semantics. Either way, managing Boston baseball teams in 2026 has suddenly become a more precarious job than drumming for Spinal Tap.
