The Philadelphia Eagles got a discomforting reality check on Thursday as superstar running back Saquon Barkley appeared to "tweak his left foot or ankle," as reported by Josh Alper of Pro Football Talk.

"Barkley’s cleat came off as he was checked out by trainers and the shoe stayed off even as Barkley remained on the field," Alper wrote.

While the hope is "that it is a minor issue that won’t keep Barkley off the field for long or at all," as Alper said, it does bring up some uncomfortable truths for the Eagles heading into the 2026 season.

To start, this upcoming season will be Barkley's ninth in the NFL, and if the Eagles reach the Super Bowl, he'll turn 30 in the week leading up to the big game.

In professional football, 30 is widely considered to be the age at which running backs are no longer as effective or healthy as they'd been earlier in their careers.

In fact, StatMuse lists only seven running backs currently playing at over 30 years old, and one of them — Kyle Juszczyk of the San Francisco 49ers — is a fullback, not a primary ball carrier in the mold of Barkley.

Only Derrick Henry of the Baltimore Ravens is consistently producing as a top rusher past the age of 30, and he's widely considered a physical marvel who may be the last ever of his kind when it comes to career longevity.

Granted, Barkley has largely avoided serious injuries in his career with the exception of a torn ACL in the 2020 season, but he's been used more frequently in his two seasons in Philadelphia.

In fact, with 345 carries for 2,005 yards in 2024 and 280 carries for 1,140 yards in 2025, he's been exposed to more contact than he ever was in a season in New York except for 2022, when he had 295 carries for 1,312 yards.

So yes, as Alper also noted, Barkley was "breaking off impressive runs while working through drills against his defensive teammates" before that ankle or foot issue on Thrusday.

But that explosive potential needs to weighed against an aging rusher who has so far defied the odds when it comes to age and injuries.
