Kentucky pulled off one of the defining upsets of a crazy college football weekend by taking down LSU, so naturally the Wildcat faithful were in the mood to celebrate.

But now the SEC is asking Kentucky to fork over some serious money to the team they just beat, and it’s thanks to a new rule the conference passed just last year.

SEC Slaps Kentucky With a Big Fine

The Southeastern Conference announced that the University of Kentucky will pay a $500,000 fine to LSU after UK fans stormed the field following the Wildcats’ 35-34 overtime victory on Saturday at Kroger Field.

Under an SEC rule passed in 2025, the penalty for violating the access to competition area policy is paid directly to the opposing institution in conference games.

So, all those Kentucky dollars will land right in LSU’s coffers this week.

You Can Thank the SEC’s New Rule

The “access to competition area” policy put in place by the SEC states that institutions must limit access to the field to players, coaches, officials, and authorized personnel. Spectators may not enter the competition area before, during, or after a contest. Any violation carries a flat $500,000 fine.

For conference games, that fine is paid right to the opposing school. For non-conference contests, it goes to the SEC’s post-graduate scholarship fund. The conference moved to the flat fee in 2025, eliminating the previous escalating structure of $100,000, $250,000, and $500,000.

Schools can avoid the penalty only if they ensure the visiting team and officials safely exit before fans enter the field and there is no interaction between fans and opposing personnel.

Kentucky improved to 5-1 (3-1 SEC) by upsetting No. 10 LSU (4-2, 1-2) in a back-and-forth matchup on Saturday night.

Running back C.J. Baxter rushed for 123 yards and two touchdowns, including a 1-yard score in overtime. Quarterback Kenny Minchey completed 23 of 36 passes for 246 yards and sealed the win with an untouched two-point conversion run up the middle.

LSU took the lead in overtime on a 15-yard scramble by quarterback Sam Leavitt. Kentucky answered, then went for two instead of kicking the extra point, the same aggressive choice that produced a win the previous week against South Carolina.

Kentucky coach Will Stein called the result fuel for a team often overlooked, saying: “People count us out. Keep doing that.”

The Aftermath

Kentucky fans poured onto the field immediately after Minchey’s conversion, celebrating a signature home win in coach Will Stein’s first season. The SEC confirmed the fine the following day.

The $500,000 payment heads to LSU, which now returns home for its next SEC contest on its gauntlet against Mississippi State while Kentucky prepares to travel to Oklahoma.
