After getting shut out by the Atlanta Braves, the Chicago White Sox beat the New York Mets, 6-4, in a come-from-behind walk-off victory, capped off by a Jake Rogers home run. Let's talk about it!
Defense, Hitting Puts White Sox in Early Hole
Through the first five innings, the White Sox offense was performing as it did against the Braves. The White Sox had just two hits (Miguel Vargas and Randal Grichuk) before the sixth inning. Mets starter Sean Manaea was mowing through the order.
To make matters worse, Sean Burke had an uncharacteristic outing, giving up four runs across six innings with just four strikeouts. Part of this was due to Brenton Doyle letting a routine fly ball by former White Sox center fielder Luis Robert Jr. drop in front of him. Two runs would score because of this. Doyle would go 0-for-3 as well in this one, with a sacrifice bunt to put the winning run in scoring position. But the offense would come back with a vengeance.
Offense Comes Roaring Back
Before the sixth inning, it felt as if the game would go a different way. The third time through the order against Manaea, the offense would come alive. With one out, Munetaka Murakami would walk against Manaea. Then, it was bombs away for the offense.
Miguel Vargas would mash his 29th home run of the season to make it a 4-2 game. The next batter, Randal Grichuk, would hit a screaming line-drive home run, continuing his hot stretch and making it back-to-back home runs. Finally, Colson Montgomery, who had struggled with his power stroke, hit his 27th home run of the year to tie the game up and bring momentum all the way back to the White Sox's side.
Back-to-back-to-back home runs would tie up this game, and from that point on, it almost felt guaranteed that the White Sox would emerge victorious in this one.
The bullpen led by Jordan Hicks, Bryan Hudson, and Grant Taylor would hold down the fort with just one hit allowed in three combined innings of relief, allowing the White Sox to complete the comeback.
In the ninth, Montgomery would take a leadoff walk, a welcome sight for White Sox fans who had been waiting for him to be more patient in his at-bats. Doyle would bunt him over to second, and Acuña would ground him over to third. But it didn't matter. Two pitches later, new catching acquisition Jake Rogers would hit his first career walk-off home run for the White Sox's 10th such win of the season.
Next Up
After the decisive walk-off victory, the White Sox will hope to win the series against the Mets with Luis Castillo on the mound against Christian Scott. Castillo will hope to rebound after a mediocre start against the Chicago Cubs. Scott, in 18 starts, has a 3.51 ERA with 105 strikeouts in 84.2 innings. The White Sox will look to ride this momentum to a series win on Saturday.
