The 14-year-old California girl allegedly raped and impregnated by her own father before they vanished to Mexico ran over her newborn baby after secretly giving birth along a rural road in Monterey County, investigators have revealed.
The disturbing update came during a joint news conference held by the FBI and Monterey County Sheriff’s Office, shedding new light on the tragic death of an infant investigators dubbed “Baby Angelita,” according to KRON 4.
Authorities said the teen girl, Diana Galvez Ortega, gave birth alone near a farm field in Moss Landing on Aug. 1, fearing her mother would discover the pregnancy and kill her.
The child’s father was allegedly her own dad, 38-year-old Sergio Galvez Perez, who authorities say had sexually abused and impregnated her.
Monterey County Sheriff’s Detective Richard Geng revealed that Diana, who had worked in agricultural fields since she was just 13, delivered the baby without medical assistance near a field where she regularly worked.
Investigators allege that after giving birth, the teen placed the newborn on the ground before getting behind the wheel of a beige Mercury sedan registered to her parents and driving over the infant.
The newborn baby suffered fatal injuries.
In a chilling text message sent to her father hours later, Diana allegedly described the birth and her desperate fear of being discovered.
“Dad! I couldn’t hold it anymore and the baby came out. I hid it … because my mom was going to see me with it, and she was going to kill me,” the Spanish-language message read, according to investigators.
Perez was reportedly in the San Francisco Bay Area when his daughter gave birth. Detectives said they uncovered no evidence that either parent knew the teenager intended to harm the newborn.
Investigators also examined the girl’s internet history, discovering searches about ending a pregnancy and avoiding detection. One particularly troubling search reportedly asked “how to turn off your iPhone location.”
The horrific case began unfolding Aug. 1 when deputies discovered the newborn’s body along Struve Road in northern Monterey County.
Authorities noticed tire tracks near the infant, who had suffered what investigators described as “extensive” traumatic injuries. Later that afternoon, detectives visited the family’s Salinas home, where they allegedly found her hiding beneath a heap of clothing inside a bedroom closet.
Concerned about her physical condition, investigators transported the teenager to a hospital for medical attention.
Before she was discharged, Perez arrived and took his daughter away, authorities said. The pair subsequently vanished, sparking a frantic search and an Amber Alert that generated hundreds of tips.
DNA testing later confirmed that Perez was the biological father of both Diana and her deceased newborn, investigators said.
After weeks of searching, authorities located Perez and his daughter in Mexico during an operation involving the FBI and Mexican law enforcement.
Diana was safely recovered, while Perez was taken into custody. Officials said narcotics were allegedly discovered in his possession.
Perez faces multiple felony allegations, including incest, unlawful sexual intercourse, lewd or lascivious acts involving a child, child concealment and child endangerment.
Authorities have repeatedly emphasized that Diana is a victim of her father’s alleged sexual abuse.
“Our priority is to ensure that this young girl is safe and has access to the support and services she needs,” the Monterey County District Attorney’s Office previously said.
Officials have not disclosed whether the teenager will face charges in connection with her newborn’s death.
