A little Wisconsin girl was horrifically killed by her older brother after he accidentally blasted her with her teenage sibling’s gun Saturday morning — that reportedly left one responding officer “crying.”
Jurnee Scales Walker, 4, was playing with her 6-year-old brother in Milwaukee, when the tot somehow got his hands on the gun around 9 a.m., authorities told the Milwaukee Sentinel Journal.
The sibling then shot little Jurnee, Milwaukee police said.
Emergencies services rushed to the 2700 block of North 53rd Street and pronounced Jurnee dead at the scene, according to authorities.
Neighbor Rodney Mckinney, who witnessed the shooting’s aftermath, said it was a “sad day.”
“The one officer came out, and he was crying, and that’s when I knew something was sad,” Mckinney told WTMJ.
A 16-year-old – who was also identified as Jurnee’s sibling – was taken into custody after the tragedy and charged with possession of a firearm, local outlets reported.
The teen was charged in Milwaukee’s juvenile court system on Monday, as authorities said they’re looking into how he came to acquire the gun.
Jurnee’s heartbroken cousin, Amya Burton-Lewis, said there was “nobody like” the “sweet” four-year-old, who was playing cops and robbers when the siblings got ahold of the gun.
“I hate that this is how everybody has to know Jurnee,” Burton-Lewis told WTMJ.
She also told the local TV station that the gun was securely stored before the shooting, and that she didn’t know how the child got access to it.
As a result, local police are asking gun owners to be especially diligent in storing their firearms and keeping them out of the reach of children.
