At least two U.S. Navy sailors have attempted to jump overboard on the USS Abraham Lincoln aircraft carrier, according to family members of the crew, after concerns were raised during an extended deployment for the war with Iran.

The aircraft carrier has been deployed since November, heading to the Middle East from the Pacific as the U.S. prepared to launch its war on Tehran at the end of February.

Relatives of the roughly 5,000 sailors and Marines on board for more than eight months have raised the alarm over supply shortages, long work schedules and fears over the potential for self-harm, in multiple reports published in the last week.

More than 200 family members of the sailors aboard met last week with Hung Cao, the acting Secretary of the Navy, according to specialist media outlet Stars and Stripes.

A second meeting, which took place virtually, between top Navy officials and loved ones of the sailors and Marines on the Lincoln, also discussed concerns over mental health and safety, according to recordings seen by MS NOW.

Cao said the Lincoln would be relieved by the USS Theodore Roosevelt carrier group at an unspecified point in the future, the outlet reported.

Annabelle Loma told the Navy Times her husband had attempted to jump overboard during his current deployment. She said he was repeatedly overextended before the incident. Maria Rodriguez told the outlet her husband, who is on the aircraft carrier, pulled a shipmate on deck as they were preparing to go overboard, in a separate incident.

Newsweek has contacted the Pentagon for comment in an email sent outside of working hours.

In response to questions about mental health, the Navy told Stars and Stripes “listening to our families, supporting our servicemembers, and ensuring the Abraham Lincoln Carrier Strike Group has the resources needed to safely and successfully accomplish its mission.”
