A German tourist on his way to return a luxury rental car was caught in the middle of a violent gunfight in Downtown Los Angeles Tuesday, leaving him and another person with gunshot wounds.

The Los Angeles Police Department said the incident began around 2:45 p.m. in an alley between South Figueroa and West Francisco streets.

Three men arrived in a black BMW car and allegedly opened fire on a male victim in the alley, who retaliated immediately by firing at the shooters, authorities said. The suspects then fled out toward Figueroa Street in the black car. 

While the tourist wasn’t the intended target, the shootout left him and another innocent bystander injured. A green-and-black McLaren at the scene was left with bullet holes through its windshield.

“My car got hit… I got hit in the arm. There were guys shooting at each other, a whole bunch of people” the tourist told KTLA.

Joshua Ramirez, who witnessed the incident, told the news outlet that he and his colleague ran to assist a heavily bleeding man standing near the green McLaren shortly after the shooting. 

It remains unclear if the shooting was gang-related and investigators are actively searching for the three perpetrators.

LAPD has not released any official information about the suspects and the investigation remains ongoing.
