San Francisco 49ers running back Christian McCaffrey was not on the field for Monday's training camp practice due to what the team described as "tightness."

After practice, 49ers offensive coordinator Klay Kubiak shared some new details regarding the nature of McCaffrey's ailment.

Fortunately, it seems as though McCaffrey's practice absence came as more of a precautionary move as the 49ers approach the start of their 2026 season.

"He's a veteran player, so you've got to monitor him and get him ready for the first week," Kubiak said. "He’s a little sore, but he’s doing fine. We’re just kinda managing as we go."

McCaffrey notched one of the best seasons of his NFL career in 2025, leading the league with 413 total touches through a full 17-game regular-season schedule. The 30-year-old running back rushed for 1,202 yards and 10 touchdowns, while reeling in 102 catches for 924 yards and seven touchdowns.

The 49ers will open up their preseason schedule with a matchup against the Tennessee Titans on Thursday. San Francisco's regular-season schedule will begin with a matchup against the Los Angeles Rams on Sept. 10.
