The Kansas City Chiefs will take the field for their preseason opener against the Los Angeles Rams on Aug. 15.

Superstar quarterback Patrick Mahomes is working his way back from the ACL tear he suffered in Week 15 of the 2025 season. And according to Chiefs head coach Andy Reid, the team is "leaning against" playing him at all in the preseason.

“There’s a pretty good chance I don’t play him [against the Rams],” Reid said, via ProFootballTalk. “Percentages are leaning that way. I don’t know if I’ll play him the second or third game, I don’t know that, but the percentages likely lean against doing that. We’ve got new people in those other positions behind him that need some work, and so the more reps they get, the better.”

As mentioned by Reid, the Chiefs have a few backup quarterback options that need to get accustomed to the Kansas City system. Justin Fields, Mahomes' primary backup, is entering his first season with the franchise following a trade completed earlier this offseason. Garrett Nussmeier, a seventh-round rookie draft pick, would also benefit from extra preseason reps.

After next Saturday's preseason opener against the Rams, the Chiefs will play two more preseason games against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Seattle Seahawks. Then, they'll open up their regular-season schedule with a Week 1 matchup against the Denver Broncos on Sept. 14.
