It's the time of year when the frustrations of teams that have had disappointing seasons begin to boil over, and the Seattle Mariners and Detroit Tigers took it out on each other Wednesday.

Seattle pitcher Gabe Speier and manager Dan Wilson were ejected amid a beanball battle in the Mariners' 4-2 victory. Five batters were plunked, leading to the benches clearing in the eighth inning. After a lot of posturing, the two sides sounded oddly philosophical about it afterward.

"It got me good, but I feel like it's kind of professional," Detroit's Gleyber Torres said of the hit-by-pitch in his thigh, according to MLB.com's Jason Beck. "Don't try to hit me in my face or anything like that, just a good enough part of my body. I'm good, no problem."

The teams weren't so level-headed while the game was happening.

Seattle's Cal Raleigh was hit, as were Detroit's Riley Greene, Max Clark and Zach McKinstry, in addition to Torres. Mariners pitcher Bryan Woo tossed seven scoreless innings despite hitting three batters. Both teams seemed ready to take offense at any slight.

The Tigers' struggles have been well-documented, culminating in trading ace Tarik Skubal to the Los Angeles Dodgers last weekend. The Mariners haven't been able to find their footing after coming within one win of the World Series last fall; they've hovered around .500 and only remained in the AL West race due to the equally up-and-down play of the Texas Rangers and Houston Astros. Seattle entered Thursday in third place in the division and outside of an AL Wild Card spot.

Against that backdrop, it's not surprising that August would bring tense emotions for both squads. The postseason might not be in either team's future this season, but they're fighting their own little war against each other.
