The Dallas Cowboys ranked dead last in points allowed (30.1 per game) and third-worst in total yards allowed (377 per game) last season, so it's no surprise the defense was a clear priority this offseason. Dallas traded for veteran linebacker Dee Winters in April, fresh off a career year in which he posted 101 combined tackles, five pass deflections, and an interception. Weeks later, the Cowboys added Pro Bowl edge rusher Rashan Gary via trade as well.

But arguably their most exciting addition was rookie safety Caleb Downs, whom the Cowboys selected 11th overall in the 2026 NFL Draft. According to defensive coordinator Christian Parker, it's Downs' versatility that has stood out most in training camp. "He's very willing. He's very curious," Parker said. "He's managing both positions well … He's really embracing what we want to do with him and overall as a defense."

Downs enters the NFL as one of the most decorated rookie prospects in his class. He earned SEC Freshman of the Year and second-team All-American honors at Alabama under Nick Saban before transferring to Ohio State for the final two years of his college career. With the Buckeyes, he won the Lott Trophy and the Jim Thorpe Award, was a unanimous All-American in both seasons, and earned Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year honors in his final year. He capped his college career with 68 combined tackles, five tackles for loss, two interceptions, two forced fumbles, and a sack across 14 games.

Beyond his big-game experience — having played for two blueblood programs — Downs brings rare versatility, capable of playing close to the line of scrimmage as a box safety or lining up as a big nickel back in coverage. At 6-foot, 200 pounds, he's a physical defender who can line up all over the field, the kind of unique skill set defensive coordinators covet.

With DaRon Bland and Cobie Durant at cornerback, and Malik Hooker and Jalen Thompson at safety, adding Downs gives Dallas one of the deepest defensive back rotations in the league — one that pairs well with a front seven featuring Gary, Winters, Kenny Clark, Quinnen Williams, and DeMarvion Overshown.
