Atlanta Falcons running back Bijan Robinson reset the market on Tuesday, agreeing to a three-year contract extension worth up to $75 million, including $51 million guaranteed.

His annual average salary of $22.25 million surpasses the previous record set by Philadelphia Eagles star Saquon Barkley ($20.6 million), making Robinson the highest-paid running back in the NFL.

Everybody knew Robinson would get his bag; nobody just knew when. But just over a week into Falcons training camp, the team has paid its best player.

However, across the NFC there's another premier running back still waiting to get paid: the Detroit Lions' Jahmyr Gibbs. Asked whether Robinson's new deal would affect negotiations with Detroit, Lions head coach Dan Campbell said it "certainly not gonna hurt, but we'll see."

"Look, I'm anxious to get Gibbs back out there," Campbell said. "Every day that goes by, that's another day that you feel like you miss with him and getting him out there with the guys and him doing his part. But there again, it'll get done when it gets done."

Gibbs has now missed five straight practices as he awaits a new deal. The Lions already exercised his fifth-year option, keeping him under contract through 2027. But having firmly established himself as one of the best dual-threat backs in the league, he wants to get paid like one.

Gibbs has the third-most total scrimmage yards (5,049) since entering the league in 2023, behind only Robinson and Baltimore Ravens star Derrick Henry. That puts the Lions running back ahead of names like Barkley, Christian McCaffrey, James Cook and Jonathan Taylor — all of whom are currently making significantly more money than him.

Last season, he set an NFL record for most total touchdowns before age 24 (49), and with David Montgomery now with the Houston Texans, there will be even more pressure on Gibbs to carry the offense this season.

Much like in Atlanta, everybody expects a deal will get done soon. The question now is what the figure will look like — and whether Robinson's record extension has put enough pressure on the Lions to match or exceed it.
