Things got feisty at the Las Vegas Raiders' practice on Friday, as the team's new quarterback, Kirk Cousins, and returning defensive Pro Bowler, Maxx Crosby, were involved in a scuffle on the field.

In the aftermath, Raiders head coach Klint Kubiak revealed that both Crosby and Cousins were held out of Saturday's practice for violating team rules.

During a final team period at Friday's practice, Cousins attempted to throw a pass to rookie receiver Malik Benson. As Crosby defended the play, he appeared to make contact with Cousins' hand.

According to The Athletic's Sam Warren, Crosby had reportedly been physical with other players on offense earlier in Friday's session and during previous practices. Apparently, Cousins took issue and may have used the incident with Crosby hitting his hand as a way to stick up for the offense.

After having words with Crosby, Cousins grabbed him by the collar, and the two players began shouting at each other. Eventually, coaches and teammates broke things up.

“Those are two leaders of our team going at it, so that is part of camp," Kubiak said after the incident. "Obviously, if you fight in the game, you throw a punch in the game, especially, you’re out of the game. So, we’ve got to be smart and treat it like a game."

Crosby had a dramatic end to his season and offseason. It appeared he was on the way out of the Raiders organization after starting his NFL career with them in 2019. Reports and speculation arrived about his frustration with the team as they held him out of games late in the season.

At one point, it appeared he actually had been traded to the Baltimore Ravens. However, ESPN reported that the trade was voided due to medical concerns after he had a physical and an MRI in Baltimore.

With that, he rejoined the Raiders for the upcoming season, who also added Heisman Trophy-winning and championship-winning quarterback Fernando Mendoza, No. 1 overall, this past April. Despite the addition, Cousins was named the team's starting quarterback ahead of training camp, and it appears he's fully bought into doing what he can to help win games.

The addition of Mendoza has brought optimism to Las Vegas that they'll turn things around. Most likely, they'll get more wins than last season with Cousins and/or Mendoza as starters, but this current team reaching the postseason would be a surprise.

There have been other scuffles at training camps, including Pro Bowler Ja'Marr Chase getting into it with several of his teammates during Cincinnati Bengals camp. Most indicate it's due to competitive ferocity and is good for the team. Still, it makes plenty of sense to keep Crosby and Cousins away for a day to cool off before getting back to the business at hand.
