The Boston Red Sox were 32-46 on the morning of June 24. It was the worst record in the American League. The firing of manager Alex Cora in April had done nothing. More changes, it seemed, could be in store.

Since they beat the Colorado Rockies on June 25, however, the Red Sox almost can't lose. They have the best record in the AL (32-5) and find themselves only a half-game behind the New York Yankees (65-51) for the league's first Wild Card spot.

“I had an executive say to me yesterday, ‘they are flying high and I hope they come down to earth before October’,” ESPN's Buster Olney said in an appearance on SportsCenter on Aug. 8.

How crazy is Boston's turnaround?

The Red Sox’s ascent from 14 games under .500 to 13 games over in 44 days is the fastest in MLB history, Olney said, citing research from Sarah Langs. The previous quickest turnaround took 59 days, by the 1914 Boston Braves.

Via the Elias Sports Bureau, Langs wrote on Twitter/X the Red Sox are the first team to win 27 or more games in a 30-game span while entering that span 10 or more games below .500. Only two earlier teams had a losing record before rattling off 27 wins in 30 games: the 1916 New York Giants and 1887 St. Louis Browns. Neither team was more than three games below .500.

The Red Sox turnaround is without precedent for such a bad team, and they're doing it on both sides of the ball.

Through June 23, the Red Sox ranked 30th among the 30 teams in runs scored, 29th in home runs and seventh in earned-run average by their pitchers.

Since June 24, they rank second in runs, seventh in home runs, and first in ERA. It's a dangerous combination of strengths that could bode well if the Red Sox reach the postseason.

If the 1914 Braves are any indication, the latest midseason turnaround in Boston will end well. Nicknamed the "Miracle Braves," the dead-ball era team came back to sweep the Philadelphia A's in the World Series.
