The Los Angeles Rams made headlines with Wednesday's training camp when retired Super Bowl champion Aaron Donald's name appeared on the NFL transaction wire as workout out with the team.

That immediately raised eyebrows since there had been speculation that Donald was contemplating unretiring to return to play for the Rams in the upcoming season. Head coach Sean McVay reacted to the news of that transaction wire update, joking a bit, but also revealing the purpose of Donald being part of camp.

"Best tryout that we've ever had," McVay joked with Gregg Rosenthal, also responding, "I think he could make the team."

"That was honestly our way of being able to get a workout with him within the parameters of what's necessary," McVay said, adding that Rams run game coordinator and defensive line coach "Giff Smith said it's the best tryout he's ever had."

Donald, 35, is gauging whether he has what it takes to return to the field for an 11th season, after last playing for the Rams in 2023. The 10-time Pro Bowler and three-time Defensive Player of the Year has played in 154 regular-season games, compiling 543 combined tackles, 111 sacks, 21 passes defended, and 24 forced fumbles.

A return to the Rams would allow Donald to join a defense that added two other significant weapons this offseason. They acquired this past season's NFL Defensive Player of the Year and new single-season sacks leader, Myles Garrett, in a trade with the Cleveland Browns, and two-time Super Bowl-winning cornerback Trent McDuffie from the Kansas City Chiefs.

Donald previously announced his retirement from the game in 2024, indicating he no longer had a desire to participate in training and felt complacent about what he achieved in football. However, something stirred up that passion within him, and it may have been seeing how much talent the Rams bring to the field on both sides of the ball.

In addition to their defense, the offense is one of the league's best, boasting last year's NFL Most Valuable Player in quarterback Matthew Stafford, along with star wide receivers Puka Nacua and Davante Adams.

As of this writing, it's no surprise that this team is the odds-on favorite to win the Super Bowl in 2027, and the addition of Donald would only further make the case of them as the top contenders.
