Taylor Farms has issued a recall for over a dozen items, including salsa and guacamole sold at shops like Walmart, Target, Whole Foods, Kroger and Trader Joe’s, over a salmonella risk.

The California-based producer of fresh-cut fruits and vegetables, which has been tied to a recent cyclospora outbreak across the country involving iceberg lettuce, said on Sunday that it was voluntarily recalling finished products containing potentially contaminated fresh jalapeños.

Salmonella bacteria, which are found in the intestines of people and animals, are a leading cause of foodborne diseases, hospitalizations, and deaths in the U.S., according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Infections—which are possible after eating contaminated food and drinking or having contact with contaminated water—are particularly dangerous in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems.

The move follows the discovery of a multistate outbreak of salmonella infections linked to fresh jalapeños supplied by Coast Citrus Distributors, a wholesale fresh produce supplier operating across the U.S. and Mexico. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the CDC identified a grower in Sinaloa, Mexico, as the potential source of the outbreak.

According to CDC data, a total of 345 people infected with the outbreak strain of Salmonella have been reported from 27 states since late July. There have been 36 hospitalizations and no deaths reported.

Taylor Farms said it is no longer sourcing products from the Sinaloa-based farmer and will be filling orders from alternative suppliers.
