Botticelli Foods is recalling the bettergoods brand of Pistachio Nut Butter after routine testing showed the presence of salmonella in three jars. According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the recalled product is distributed exclusively by Walmart.

Numerous public health alerts and recalls have been issued this year due to potential damage, foodborne illness, contamination and undeclared food allergens. Recently, over 360,000 pounds of turkey bacon products had been recalled due to potential Listeria monocytogenes contamination, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service.

Millions of Americans experience food sensitivities or allergies every year. According to the FDA, the nine "major" food allergens in the United States are eggs, milk, fish, wheat, soybeans, crustacean shellfish, sesame, tree nuts and peanuts.

When reached for comment regarding the recall, Walmart told Newsweek Monday night, "Safety is a top priority. When notified of recalls, we move swiftly to remove the impacted products from our stores and implement a sales block at our registers and online. We are working closely with our supplier, and customers who have this should discontinue use."

Newsweek also reached out to Botticelli Foods via email on Monday night for comment.

What to Know

According to the FDA alert, the affected product was distributed to 19 states: Alabama, Alaska, Arizona, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Kansas, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Mexico, Oregon, South Dakota, Tennessee, Washington and Wyoming.

It is sold in a 6.7-ounce glass jar with lot code number LB028ACP04 and UPC number 194346207961, the alert says. The recalled product's expiration date is January 28, 2027. "No other lots of bettergoods Pistachio Nut Butter are subject to this recall," per the warning.

No illnesses or injuries have been reported related to the recall as of Monday, the FDA says.

People who have purchased the recalled nut butter are urged to return it to the original place of purchase for a refund and not consume it. What Is Salmonella?

Salmonella is a group of bacteria that can cause an infection called salmonellosis. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), people become infected after swallowing the bacteria, most commonly through contaminated food, although it can also spread through contaminated water or contact with infected animals or their environments. Symptoms often include diarrhea, fever and stomach cramps, and the CDC estimates that salmonella causes about 1.35 million infections in the United States each year.

According to the FDA recall of the bettergoods Pistachio Nut Butter, the product was recalled after routine testing in Florida found salmonella contamination in three jars.

Although anyone can get a salmonella infection, some are more likely to become seriously ill. The CDC identifies young children, especially those under age 5, adults 65 and older, international travelers and people with weakened immune systems as groups at higher risk.

Recent Cyclospora Outbreak: What We Know

The recall comes as the United States continues grappling with recent foodborne illnesses, including a cyclospora outbreak linked to contaminated produce.

Cyclospora is a parasite that causes an intestinal illness called cyclosporiasis. The sickness spreads when people consume food contaminated with the parasite and can trigger symptoms like diarrhea and dehydration. The recent outbreak has affected thousands.

It has also been connected to a pair of deaths in Michigan. Both people had significant underlying health conditions that may have been worsened by the infection and dehydration, the state Department of Health and Human Services said.
