The New York Yankees have added a new catcher to their depth.

According to Ted Schwerzler of MinnesotaSportsFan.com, the Yankees have signed catcher Mitch Garver to a minor league contract. In addition, Schwerzler shared that Garver is set to join Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre and has an opt-out later this month.

Seeing the Yankees bring in a veteran catcher like Garver on a minor league deal makes sense. It is clear that they need more depth behind the plate, so there is no harm in them taking a look at Garver with this minor league contract.

Garver was released by the Seattle Mariners earlier this week after struggling with the American League West club this season. In 50 games with the Mariners this campaign, he had four home runs, 15 RBI, and a .175 batting average. This was after he had nine home runs, 30 RBI, and a .209 batting average in 87 games with the Mariners during the 2025 season.

While Garver has struggled in recent seasons, he has also shown in the past that he can make an impact at the plate. He most notably won a Silver Slugger Award in 2019, when he recorded 31 home runs, 61 RBI, and a .273 batting average in 93 games. He also posted 15 home runs in 114 games just back during the 2024 season with the Mariners, which is not necessarily that long ago.

It will now be interesting to see if Garver can impress during his minor league deal and earn a call-up to the Yankees' roster from here.
